Kiwis are buying EVs 1.5 times faster than Europeans.

So says Chargemaster NZ, which bases its calculation on EV sales per head of population.

Europeans bought 80,000 more battery electrics (BEVs) and plug-ins (PHEVs) than in 2016, says the company which supplies EV charging solutions for Kiwis.

With sales almost perfectly split between the two types,

Over there, BEVs are just as popular as their longer-range cousins with a 39% increase in sales spilt between the two types, Chargemaster says in its latest newsletter.

That was 287,270 vehicles in 2017.

Across the European Union population of 508 million this is a per capita ratio of 0.0565% of the total population, the company says.

Kiwis, by comparison, bought 4055 EVs against a population of 4.7 million, or 0.086% of the total population.

“Ignoring data like the available population who can buy cars (which should be similar), Kiwis are buying EVs per head of population 1.5 times faster than Europeans.”
