Mercedes-Benz GLC adds PHEV model

The mid-size Mercedes-Benz GLC SUV is getting a range-wide update and adding a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) model.

The update features new styling, a revised choice of powertrains and technological upgrades and extends across the entire Mercedes-Benz GLC range of SUVs and coupes.

The PHEV model will be available from the second quarter in 2020.

The exterior design update features sculpted surfaces and chrome elements, which run from the front to the rear end as standard. The headlights have been redesigned, with the heavily contoured radiator grille giving it a “strong character,” Mercedes-Benz says.

The powertrains have been revised and now offers a 2.0L turbocharged petrol engine, in conjunction with a smooth-shifting 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission.

The Mercedes-Benz GLC 200 and GLC 300 SUVs can be ordered with dynamic body control adaptive suspension for the first time.

The GLC range will include a PHEV, a dual drivetrain combining a 2L, four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine (155kW/250Nm) with an electric motor (90kW/440Nm), with a maximum output of 235 KW and 700Nm.

The battery can store 13.5kWh of energy and can be fully charged in two hours using the Mercedes-Benz wallbox home or public charging stations. It takes seven hours using a conventional domestic power socket.

New Zealand pricing has yet to be announced, while in Australia pricing starts from $66,100.
