Meridian opens Kaikōura EV charging station

Meridian Energy has opened a new electric vehicle (EV) charging station in Kaikōura, adding to what is now one of the best-served small towns in New Zealand for EV charging infrastructure.

The facility at 136-142 Beach Road features three 160kW DC fast chargers with both CCS and CHAdeMO connectors, according to a company social media post.

The new Meridian site joins existing charging infrastructure from ChargeNet, which operates fast chargers up to 300kW at two locations in the town, and Tesla, which has six Superchargers.

This concentration of charging options makes Kaikōura unusually well-equipped for EV drivers, particularly given its small size and strategic position on State Highway 1.

The charging station is positioned to serve drivers travelling between Christchurch and northern South Island destinations including Blenheim, Nelson and Picton.

Meridian says the location provides an opportunity for EV drivers to charge while accessing local amenities or taking in coastal views during their journey.

The Kaikōura site represents another addition to the expanding public charging network along key South Island travel routes, with the 160kW charging capability offering faster top-up times for compatible vehicles.

The charging station’s position directly on State Highway 1 addresses infrastructure needs for long-distance EV travel in the South Island’s eastern corridor, while adding to an already comprehensive local charging network.
