Meridian to open 100% renewable EV charging hub at Auckland Airport
Meridian Energy is partnering with Auckland Airport to open a major new EV charging hub—set to be the first in the country certified as powered entirely by renewable energy.
The site, due to open in June 2025, replaces a previous Vector charging location and will feature five 160kW DC fast chargers, each with dual ports, allowing for up to ten vehicles to charge simultaneously. It will also include facilities tailored to a wide range of users, including two chargers designed for drivers with mobility challenges and a drive-through bay specifically for EVs towing boats, trailers or caravans.
The company says this will be a flagship location in its expanding network, equipped with dynamic power allocation technology to maximise charging speed based on real-time demand. The hub will support both CCS and CHAdeMO standards.
Significantly, it will be the first site on Meridian’s network to be certified as 100% renewable, with all energy used matched with equivalent generation from its wind or hydro stations.
Meridian says the new hub is part of its commitment to supporting the country’s growing EV fleet, especially in Auckland, which has the highest EV uptake in Aotearoa. The site has also been designed with scalability in mind, with space allocated for additional chargers as demand increases.
