MG4 EV Urban launches from $38,990, skips small battery option

MG Motor New Zealand will launch the MG4 EV Urban in late April 2026, pricing the electric hatchback from $38,990 plus on-road costs as it targets mainstream EV adoption.

The front-wheel drive model offers a 416km WLTP range and seats five adults, with MG positioning it as an accessible entry point into electric mobility for New Zealand drivers.

MG has opted to skip the cheaper 43kWh Standard Range variant available in other markets, instead bringing only the 54kWh Extended Range version to New Zealand to ensure adequate range for local conditions.

“Designed for how Kiwis live today, the MG4 EV Urban has room for five adults, gear with rapid DC charging capability from 10–80% in around 30 minutes, helping drivers stay on the move,” says Dean Sheed, Country Business Manager at MG Motor New Zealand.

The model features a 54kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery paired with a 120kW electric motor, delivering 250Nm of torque and 0–100km/h acceleration in 8.7 seconds. DC fast charging supports up to 150kW, while the onboard 6.6kW AC charger handles home charging duties.

Energy consumption is rated at 15.3kWh/100km on the WLTP combined cycle, with the top speed limited to 160km/h.

Space and tech

Despite compact exterior dimensions of 4395mm in length, the MG4 EV Urban provides 382 litres of boot space, expanding to 1266 litres with rear seats folded. An additional 98-litre underboot storage compartment adds further practicality.

The model includes heated front seats, a 10.25-inch virtual driver display, and a 12.8-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality allows the car to power external devices, while a wireless phone charger and multiple USB-C ports keep devices topped up.

Standard equipment includes 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights with daytime running lights, automatic climate control, and a 360-degree camera system.

Sheed says the model addresses cost-of-living concerns by offering “greater cost certainty and freedom from fuel price volatility” compared to petrol vehicles.

Safety and warranty package

The MG4 EV Urban includes MG Pilot advanced driver assistance systems, featuring adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, and blind spot detection. Six airbags provide occupant protection.

MG backs the vehicle with a 10-year warranty when serviced within its nationwide dealer network, along with comprehensive roadside assistance coverage.

The launch follows MG’s strategy of bringing affordable electric vehicles to New Zealand, with the brand selecting specifications aimed at balancing range, features and value for local conditions.
