Mini electric arrives mid-2020

The first all-electric Mini is set for a mid-2020 launch in New Zealand – earlier than expected.

Sporting a 135kW electric motor delivering a 235km to 270km range, the Mini Cooper SE Hatch will be introduced here in mid-2020, Mini New Zealand confirms.

It was expected in 2021.

The news follows the show debut of the Mini Cooper SE Hatch at the IAA Cars 2019 international motor show in Frankfurt am Main, which ends September 22.

“We look forward to introducing this exciting and game-changing member of the Mini family to the New Zealand market next year,” Mini New Zealand head Chris Roe says, adding that it marks a new era for the brand.

It’s based on the striking three-door conventionally powered Mini Hatch but with dynamic model-specific accents.

Bespoke suspension tuning and a low centre of gravity provide go-kart handling, the electric Mini getting to 100km/h in 7.3 seconds.

It will be built in the United Kingdom at Mini Plant Oxford.

Mini New Zealand will announce pricing and specification details closer to the launch.
