Mitch Evans wins for Jaguar TCS Racing in dramatic Sao Paulo season opener
Kiwi driver Mitch Evans made history as the first driver to win an ABB FIA Formula E race after starting last on the grid.
Evans started at 22nd in the Sao Paulo E-Prix in Brazil on December 7, 2024, and got to 15th after overtaking five cars on turn four, then third by the halfway stage, says Jaguar TCS Racing, the reigning ABB FIA Formula E Teams’ World Champions.
He joins Lucas di Grassi and Sébastien Buemi as the drivers holding most the victories in Formula E history (13 each) since the series started in 2014.
Evans now leads the Drivers’ standings with 25 points following the Season 11 start, which saw two red flags across the 35-lap race.
Fellow Kiwi and Jaguar TCS Racing driver Nick Cassidy retired while battling for a possible win or podium position after suspension damage to his I-Type 7 caused in a racing incident with DS Penske’s Maximilian Günther and Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein forced him out with a lap remaining.
Evans says it was a crazy race.
“I made up 10 places on the first lap and found myself in the mix quite quickly,” he says.
“After that my focus definitely shifted to getting some big points and possibly a podium, so to come away with a win is incredible.”
The next race is on January 11, 2025, in Mexico City.
