Model 3 passes another safety milestone

The Tesla Model 3 has added a 2019 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ vehicle award to its five-star safety rating.

New tests from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) give the Model 3 the highest achievement awarded by the institute, Tesla says.

It tested the car’s crashworthiness, occupant protection, crash avoidance, and headlight systems, with the Model 3 earning top marks in all eight tests, including a superior rating in front crash prevention, which evaluates a car’s automatic emergency braking system, and the highest possible rating in IIHS’ headlight assessment.

The institute’s results also demonstrate the exceptional strength of the Model 3’s all-glass roof, able to resist 907kg of force, earning a higher strength-to-weight ratio score than any other fully electric vehicle that IIHS has tested.

In addition, the Model 3’s safety restraint system also earned high marks in IIHS’ evaluation.

Tesla says it is also committed to making its cars even safer via over-the-air updates.
