Distinctive orange Neuron electric scooters are for hire in downtown Auckland.

The rental cost is similar to Flamingo and Jump at $1 to unlock and 38c a minute thereafter using a smartphone app to scan the scooter’s QR code.

The Neuron N3 Scooter joins another Singaporean brand, Beam, already in Auckland with its Saturn e-scooter after operating in Christchurch since May 2019.

Helmets are provided with the Neuron scooters which are geofenced to enforce slow-zones, no-ride areas, and no-parking zones throughout Auckland city.

A subscription service called Neuron Passes is also available in three-day, weekly and monthly options, allowing riding for up to 90 minutes daily with no additional unlocking fees.

Neuron says its N3 e-scooters offer the highest levels of safety, stability, and rider experience.

“Each e-scooter has a wide foot plate for enhanced stability and comfort; large 12-inch wheels with solid silicone tyres to handle uneven ground; plus, both electronic and drum brakes that make it highly capable of safely navigating Auckland’s hilly terrain.”

Lime and Wave e-scooter were not granted licences to continue in Auckland, the Auckland Council citing the other four brands’ stronger safety aspects as a key reason for providing them with operating licences from December 3, 2019.

Beam also operates in Adelaide in South Australia and is due to start shortly in Bunbury Western Australia.

New Zealand owned and operated Flamingo electric scooters are also offered in Wellington and Christchurch, while Uber run Jump is worldwide.

Up to 3200 e-scooters are expected to be available to rent in Auckland.
