The government’s latest target of getting 4000 electric vehicles on New Zealand roads has arrived five months early.

About 200 EVs are registered monthly with a total of 4027 EVs now in the country.

“This is great news and a reflection of the work undertaken by the government and private sector in normalising the purchase and integration of EVs into the New Zealand vehicle fleet,” transport minister Simon Bridges says.

“If registrations continue to increase, as we have seen this year, we will be on track to meet our challenging target of 64,000 EVs registered in New Zealand by the end of 2021.”

He says the rising uptake has led to increased manufacturer confidence, resulting in more choice than ever before.

“We are also seeing an increase in the number of used EVs importers are bringing into the country.”

“It is great that both private and public sector organisations are helping uptake by choosing EVs over conventional petrol or diesel vehicles for their fleets.”

The government’s EV website can be found at electricvehicles.govt.nz.
