Plug-in hybrid BMW X5 due next year

The new BMW X5 will have a plug-in hybrid version during 2019.

Sports vehicle the BMW X5 xDrive45e iPerformance combines a model-specific in-line six-cylinder petrol engine with the latest BMW eDrive technology.

The plug-in hybrid increases power output to 290kW, has up to 80km of electrically powered range (three times more) and a significant reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 levels (49g/km) compared to its predecessor model.

It gets to 100km/h in 5.6 seconds (more than a second less than the earlier model) and the top speed on electric power alone is increased from 120km/h to 140km/h.

These improved levels are the result of a newly developed drive technology, BMW says.

It has 82kW output from a lithium-ion battery with extended storage capacity and further developed power electronics for intelligent energy management.

Together, the two drive units generate a system output of 290kW along with a maximum system torque of 600Nm.

The combustion engine and electric motor deliver their power to an eight-speed Steptronic transmission of the latest generation and the intelligent all-wheel drive system BMW xDrive ensuring sporty driving pleasure on the road and supreme off-road performance.

The BMW X5 xDrive45e iPerformance’s top speed is 235km/h.

When all seats are used, the storage volume is 500 litres, and if the rear backrests are folded down 1716 litres of space is available.

The fuel tank holds 69 litres – suitable for long distances.

A two-axle air suspension and electronically controlled dampers are fitted as standard.

The optional suspension systems available for the plug-in hybrid model include integral active steering.

In addition to a comprehensive selection of features around intelligent connectivity, new digital services offered are geared specifically towards electromobility.

All driver assistance systems developed for the “sports activity vehicle” as well as high-quality options to enhance comfort and luxurious interior ambience are also available.
