Polestar 2 sells out, new orders open
Orders for the updated Polestar 2 have opened after strong demand saw current models sell out three weeks following New Zealand’s first Polestar Space opening at 58 Great South Road in Newmarket, Auckland.
New Zealand pricing has been confirmed for the updated Polestar 2 with some variants still eligible for the $8625 Clean Car Discount (rebate).
The upgrades feature new solutions connected to climate impact and transparency, along with design detail and specification updates that allow improved efficiency.
New colours, wheel designs and interior trim are among design and specification updates, while the optional Polestar Engineered Performance Software upgrade adds 50kW of power and 20Nm torque to the long-range dual-motor version, raising output to 350kW and dropping the official zero to 100km/h acceleration time to 4.4 seconds.
“After selling out the first year of Polestar 2 inside six months, it is great to know that the updated Polestar 2 is on the way,” says Polestar New Zealand brand manager Bruce Fowler.
“Along with new exterior colours and wheel designs, the updated Polestar 2 will be even more environmentally friendly, thanks to a continuing focus on reducing greenhouse emissions.”
Fowler says New Zealand has secured a good supply of the updated Polestar 2, scheduled to be available from September 2022 subject to shipping.
New version Polestar 2 pricing starts at $76,900 for the standard range single motor (eligible for $8625 Clean Car rebate) with 68kWh battery and 470km range (WLTP).
The standard range single motor – Pilot Lite variant is $79,000 (eligible for $8625 rebate), the standard range single motor – Plus and Pilot Lite $86,900, the long-range single motor – Pilot Lite $86,900, the long-range single motor – Plus and Pilot Lite $94,900 with 78kWh battery and 540km range, the long-range dual motor – Plus and Pilot Lite $104,900 with 78kWh battery and 480km range, and the long-range dual motor – Performance $114,990.
In 2021, Polestar reduced greenhouse gas emissions per car sold by 6% through its focus on increased efficiency and the use of renewable energy. The updated Polestar 2 will be another step towards the target of creating a truly climate-neutral car by 2030, to halve carbon emissions per sold car between 2020 and 2030 and reach climate neutrality across its value chain by 2040.
The aluminium tray that carries the battery casing for all versions will see a CO2e reduction of 750kg per car, thanks to the decision to only purchase aluminium for this component from smelters that use renewable energy.
In the second half of the year, Polestar will replace the aluminium in the wheels with low-carbon aluminium that is produced using renewable energy, resulting in a further 600kg CO2e reduction per car.
Polestar has partnered with Circulor, a leader in supply chain traceability, to include blockchain traceability of mica, in addition to cobalt that is already traced in Polestar 2 batteries. Blockchain technology allows Polestar to trace risk minerals from material source to finished product.
Design detail updates bring increasing use of renewable, recyclable and recycled materials and a vegan upholstery option.
A removable sunshade for the panoramic glass roof is available from Polestar Space from mid-July 2022 for all Polestar 2s with a glass roof.
