Polestar 2 recalled

Polestar has initiated a voluntary safety recall and a service campaign that contains a number of updates for Polestar 2 vehicles.

The official communication will be sent to affected customers from Monday November 2, with the electric sedan not due in Australia or New Zealand until early 2022, although it was expected in New Zealand in late 2020.

The recall of 4586 Polestar 2 EVs involves the replacement of faulty inverters on most delivered customer vehicles. The inverters transform the stored energy in the battery into the power required by the electric motors.

The service campaign relates to the high voltage coolant heater (HVCH) and affects 3150 vehicles delivered to customers. The HVCH is responsible for both cabin and high voltage battery heating. Faulty parts fitted to early production cars need to be replaced.

These hardware updates can be performed in a single workshop visit, Polestar says.

Any undelivered vehicles will be updated before handover, and any vehicles already at workshops will also be updated according to the campaigns.

There may be handover delays on new vehicles that need to be updated accordingly, the company says.

As part of the actions required by the recall and service campaign, all vehicles will also be upgraded to be compatible with forthcoming over-the-air (OTA) updates. This will allow Polestar to push new software directly to Polestar 2 vehicles when OTA updates are available.

The communication does not apply to customers in the US, Canada or Switzerland as vehicles have not yet been delivered in those markets and deliveries will not be affected.

Earlier, Polestar recalled 2189 vehicles due to a fault in the logic of the Battery Energy Control Module, which could result in the EV suddenly losing power while driving, according to Teslarati. The company said a manual software update was required to rectify the issue.

Polestar is the independent electric performance car brand founded by Volvo Cars and Geely Holding.

In 2019, the Polestar 2 was revealed as the company’s first fully electric, higher volume premium car. Arriving in markets from the middle of 2020, the Polestar 2 electric performance fastback comes with 300kW and 660Nm, all-wheel drive, a 78kWh battery pack and 470km range (WLTP) for the first year of production.

This year Polestar released the Precept – a vision study vehicle designed to showcase the brand’s future vision in terms of sustainability, digital technology and design. In the future, Polestar 3 will join the portfolio as a fully electric performance SUV.
