Record number of Toyota hybrids sold in 2014

Toyota hybrid modelsToyota has sold its seven-millionth hybrid vehicle worldwide – with 6261 of those being sold in New Zealand, The company – which is world’s largest producer of hybrid vehicles – has sold 3.3 million hybrids in Japan, 2.5 million in the US, 770,000 in Europe, and more than 67,000 in Australia.

The total number of Toyota and Lexus hybrid vehicles sold new in New Zealand since 2003 is 6261, as at today, according to Toyota New Zealand staff.

Toyota estimates its hybrid vehicles have cut carbon emissions by approximately 49 million tonnes and saved approximately 18 million kilolitres of fuel compared with vehicles of similar size and driving performance using petrol-only engines.

Toyota began selling the Prius in the Japan in 1997, in Australia in 2001, and in New Zealand in 2003.

Next year, Toyota will start selling its first mass-produced hydrogen fuel-cell hybrid vehicle in Japan, Europe and the United States.
