Sweden plans national EV charging network

Sweden is banning the sale of new petrol and diesel cars in 2030 and aims to establish a national EV charging network.

Prime minister Stefan Löfven has announced plans for the measures with Sweden targeting 2050 to be fossil fuel free.

It will bring the country in line with Norway and Denmark where similar bans for 2025 and 2030 respectively will be introduced.

That means 10 countries have committed to banning the sale of fossil-fuel cars, including the United Kingdom and France which both aim to have bans apply in about 2040.

Sweden’s sale ban is intended to reduce harmful emissions and speed up compliance with the Paris Climate Accord, Löfven says.

Similar fossil fuel vehicle sale bans apply Denmark, India, the Netherlands, Ireland, and Israel from around 2030 as well, while Norway, South Korea and Cost Rica plan earlier bans.

Germany is considering something similar for about 2050 but nothing like it is planned in the US.
