Tesla aims to help power the UK

Well known for its electric vehicles, Tesla now wants to provide electricity in the United Kingdom.

Tesla has applied to the Gas and Electricity Markets Authority for a licence to generate electricity in the UK, the application reportedly signed by Tesla Energy products sales director Evan Rice.

More than just an EV company, Tesla in heavily involved in battery energy storage and solar panel and solar roof tile production.

For instance, Tesla built one of the world’s largest lithium-ion batteries in 2017 for the Australian state grid after power blackouts in South Australia followed a 2016 storm, Sky News

reports.

Tesla chief executive Elon Musk has again caused a storm, recently tweeting the company’s “stock price is too high”, which saw about US$13 billion wiped off its market value after he posted the comment, although shares still remain reasonably high.

In a series of other tweets, Musk described COVID-19 US lockdown measures as “forcibly imprisoning people in their homes” and he is unsure when Tesla production in Fremont, California, can resume.

Some media speculate Tesla might introduce its Autobidder real-time trading platform operating in South Australia to the UK market.

The Daily Mail ponders whether that will start a “war” with the Big Six – UK’s largest gas and electricity suppliers – British Gas, EDF Energy, E. ON, Npower, Scottish Power, and SSE.
