Tesla produces five millionth EV

Tesla-5-million-EVs-on-X-Twitter

Tesla has announced on X (formerly Twitter) that it has this week produced its five millionth vehicle.

However, reports suggest Tesla production may drop slightly in Q3 due to factory upgrades and a short stoppage at Giga Shanghai to allow for the new Model 3.

Electrek reckons Tesla production will rise again once the Cybertruck is produced en masse.

It also lists Tesla’s installed annual production capacity, showing Giga Shanghai’s more than 750,000 EVs (Model 3 and Model Y) is the top producing Tesla factory.

Some Giga Shanghai EVs are sent to New Zealand and Australia.

Green Car Reports says BYD could be Tesla’s closest rival in the EV space, adding BYD claimed in August it had produced five million “New Energy Vehicles” (NEVs), although these included plug-in hybrids (PHEVs).

BYD produced more than 1.5 million PHEVs in the first half of this year and is expected to produce about three million by the end of 2023, Green Car Reports adds.

Tesla also reported in September it had about 50,000 superchargers globally.
