Tesla shows new Roadster at Semi truck launch

Tesla Roadster frontTesla had a surprise unveiling of its new Roadster 2.0 at the Tesla Semi truck launch on Friday.

The Roadster is hailed at the world’s fastest production car, able to reach nearly 100km/h in 1.9 seconds and get to a top speed of 402km/h. That compares with the world’s fastest car’s top speed of nearly 447km/h.

A 200kWh battery pack will power the Roadster to almost 1000km of range.

It has three separate motors – one for the front wheels and two powering the rear.

The all-wheel drive Roadster will have torque steering.

The sleek design includes an all-glass roof, a tapered nose and no grille and seating for four – although tight for the two rear passengers.

Prices start at US$200,000 and the Roadster 2.0 will be available from 2020.

It will cost about US$50,000 to reserve one of the first 1000 “Founder Series” cars.

The unveiling of the two electric trucks and the Roadster helped push up Tesla share prices.
