Tesla testing sees supercharger at Nurburgring

Tesla has put a supercharger at the Nurburgring racing circuit in Germany where it’s testing Model S prototypes.

After the Porsche Taycan set a four-door EV record at the track, Tesla chief executive officer Elon Musk says a Tesla Model S with the three motor ‘Plaid’ powertrain, a new chassis prototype and a seven-seater will be tested there.

The Plaid Model S has reportedly beaten the Taycan’s time, although the time is unofficial and an official crack may come later. It’s said to have clocked seven minutes 23 seconds against the pre-production Taycan’s seven minutes 42 seconds.

Replying to a tweet, Musk says the next Tesla Roadster would “absolutely” beat the 6:44.97 all-time record at Nurburgring, but he doubts the Model 3 could beat the Taycan’s time although “very close”. However, Musk suggests the Model 3 could beat the Taycan over multiple laps because of its longer range.

Tweeting the Model S Plaid’s achievements at the Nurburgring, Musk says Tesla expects the track times to be beaten by the production variant.

Musk says the Plaid S with seven seats should be in production about October or November 2020.

Meanwhile, Tesla says the supercharger has been installed which “makes it feel like home”.
