Underground driverless electric buses: Musk

Tesla and The Boring Company founder Elon Musk now wants to put high-speed electric buses in tunnels.

Initially, he talked about making a network of urban tunnels to bypass above ground traffic, lowering individual cars from street level and using high speed electric “skates” to whiz them around underground.

Now he aims for mass transit first, especially for pedestrians and cyclists.

“Will still transport cars, but only after all personalized mass transit needs are met,” Musk tweeted. “It’s a matter of courtesy & fairness. If someone can’t afford a car, they should go first.

“I guess you could say it’s a 150 mph (240km/h), underground, autonomous, electric bus that automatically switches between tunnels and lifts. So, yes, a bus.”

Musk says The Boring Company’s urban loop system would have thousands of small stations the size of a single parking space that take passengers very close to their destination and blend seamlessly into the city’s fabric.

He’s already digging tunnels in Los Angeles and plans to do the same on the US East Coast.
