Vector launches first rapid EV chargers in Auckland CBD

Lines-company vector has launched the first rapid electric vehicle chargers in downtown Auckland.

The two chargers, which can each replenish EV batteries in just 15 to 30 minutes, will be unveiled at Vector’s Hobson Street substation at noon.

“This is the start of a new energy future for Aucklanders,” says Simon Mackenzie, Vector’s chief executive. “In the next eight months, Vector will install at least another 15 rapid chargers and a similar number of standard chargers throughout the city, taking the total to 35.

“For EV drivers in a hurry, they’ll be able to pull into Hobson Street and charge their vehicles in the time it takes to pop across the road and have a coffee.”

Mackenzie says Vector will continue to support the uptake of electric vehicles across Auckland and already has its own EVs.

“We are the electricity infrastructure provider for Auckland and, as the city continues to grow, we are committed to using renewable energy technologies as much as possible. Our network of rapid and standard chargers will ensure EV drivers have the freedom and range to drive wherever they want to go around the Auckland region and beyond.”

“About new 50 EVs are being registered each month and this is going to accelerate rapidly in the next few years. Vector will be supporting this growth at every turn,” he says. Mackenzie says Vector will continue to expand the charger network as EVs become more commonplace in New Zealand.

Vector was the first to install standard chargers in the CBD, with two at its Newmarket headquarters. They take three to five hours to charge an EV so more will be installed in places like malls and cinemas, allowing people to do their shopping or see a movie while their car is charging.
