Getting EVs to park and charge themselves is likely within six years under a concept unveiled by Hyundai and Kia.

Using a smartphone, the operator can have an EV automatically cruise to a vacant wireless charging station. When fully charged, the EV will relocate to another vacant parking space using the Automated Valet Parking System (AVPS), allowing other vehicles to charge.

The vehicle will also come when the driver calls for it.

The system offers a convenience to drivers faced with overcrowding of both parking and charging locations as EV numbers grow, Hyundai says.

The overall process is performed by continuous communication between the EV, parking facility, charging system and driver.

The parking facility sends the location of empty parking spaces and charging stations, while the charging system updates the charging status of the vehicle in real-time.

Hyundai and Kia hope to have the technology commercially available upon the launch of level 4 autonomous vehicles in about 2025.

They also plan to commercialise autonomous vehicles in various smart cities from 2021 with a goal of launching fully autonomous vehicles by 2030.
