The new Nissan Leaf will be in Australian showrooms in August, priced from A$49,990 plus on road costs and other charges.

Nissan NZ hopes to see it launched in New Zealand close to the same time, managing director John Manley saying pre-ordering is unavailable here yet as pricing has to be determined, although specs will be the same as for Australia.

Potential Australian customers can pre-order it from March 8, with Nissan there saying the five-seat car offers a premium electric driving experience at an affordable price.

“With strong interest in the new Nissan Leaf we see great potential for the vehicle and at this price we are giving it every chance to succeed,” Nissan Australia managing director Stephen Lester says.

“The new Nissan Leaf will be sold in 89 Nissan dealers nationwide, making Nissan the largest electric vehicle network in Australia.”

More than 11,000 customers have registered interest in the new Leaf in Australia.

It comes with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, e-Pedal which allows the driver to accelerate, decelerate or stop through the one pedal, ProPilot Assist providing autonomous drive technology single-lane highway traffic, and other features.

Nissan’s partnership with Australian EV hardware, software and charging services provider Jet Charge will help customers with home EV charging infrastructure.

The Leaf’s 40kWh battery provides 110kW of power (a 38% increase), 320Nm of torque (a 14% increase on the first generation) and 270km range – making it ideal for city-based Australians who on average travel 38km/day.

The car can be charged within 24 hours, the time dropping to 7.5 hours if the household has the latest 7kW home charger. The new Leaf can also be plugged into a Chademo rapid charger and get from 20% to 80% charge in about 60 minutes depending on charging conditions.

Owners can use the charge from their car to power their home or business, or return electricity to the grid.

Safety features include around-view monitoring with moving object detection, intelligent cruise control and emergency braking with pedestrian protection, intelligent lane intervention, forward collision warning, rear cross traffic alert, and front and rear parking sensors.

The driver assisted by an eight-inch touchscreen display, seven-inch advanced drive assist display, satellite navigation and a heated steering wheel.

Colours available include Arctic White, Ivory Pearl with black roof, Magnetic Red, Pearl Black, Platinum and Gun Metallic.
