Video: Free use trial at Devonport Wharf EV chargers

Two electric vehicle chargers at Devonport Wharf car park on Auckland’s North Shore are free to use for a year starting March 29.

The AC medium chargers are available 24 hours and can add up to 40km driving range from 30 minutes charging, with customers needing to bring their own Type 2 cables.

“Devonport’s new EV chargers contribute to the infrastructure network required to support the fast-emerging electric transport future and the forecast rapid uptake of EVs,” Auckland Council North Shore ward councillor Chris Darby says.

The chargers are part of a Smart Cities trial Auckland Transport (AT) is running in Devonport.

“AT has already installed 48 EV chargers at our carparks across Auckland. However, these chargers in Devonport are different as they also include environmental data monitoring, parking sensors, wi-fi stations and adaptive lighting,” AT business technology executive general manager Roger Jones says.

First time users of the chargers need to register for an EV charge card from Devon on The Wharf restaurant in the ferry building from 6am until late Monday to Friday and from 8am on weekends.

Once registered, this card can be used as often as the EV user likes.

The Devonport EV chargers are unrelated to the AT Local trial using six EVs (three LDV E80 vans and three Hyundai Ioniqs) for on-demand rideshare in the same area.
