Video: Hyundai shows ‘rolling lab’ electrified sports car

Hyundai has revealed its RM20e sports car at the Beijing International Automotive Exhibition 2020 in China from September 26 to October 5.

Described as a “rolling lab” for testing high performance technologies, the RM20e signifies the electric-based high-performance potential for Hyundai N brand and can produce a blistering 596kW of power and 960Nm of torque.

RM stands for racing midship, a rear-drive, midship powertrain configuration.

Since the initiation of project RM, the series has evolved to include the RM14, RM15, RM16 and RM19.

RM models have undergone extensive testing to validate advanced technologies, observe their effective increase in performance, and improve them for application in future N models.

“Our new electrified RM20e pushes the proven RM platform forcefully into a new, environmentally-focused decade of the 21st century, stretching the performance envelope of electrification on normal road environments,” Hyundai Motor Group research and development head Albert Biermann says.

RM20e is expected to go from 0-100km/h in less than three seconds and 0-200km/h in 9.88 seconds, the layout helping it achieve the traction required for this level of acceleration.

Hyundai has a variety of production HEV, PHEV, EV and FCEV powertrains, providing a full spectrum for testing in this high-performance sports car platform.

The company’s recent investment and strategic partnership with Rimac Automobili has facilitated co-development of both EV and FCEV prototypes.

Hyundai Motor Group aims to deploy 44 eco-friendly models by 2025.
