Video: Omoda launches NZ’s cheapest electric SUV

Omoda has launched in New Zealand, setting a new price mark for electric SUVs in the market, and the first battery over 60kWh available for under $50,000.

The E5, based on the petrol C5, will launch in two trim levels – the BX at $47,990 and the EX at $54,990. Those prices are promotional for a period of a few months, before defaulting to being $2000 more each.

Country manager Sheldon Humphries says it took ‘long negotiations’ to get the prices down to that level.

“Our commitment to offering competitive pricing represents not just value, but our dedication to accessibility, innovation and exceeding the expectations of Kiwi drivers. We believe our competitive pricing strategy will not only make premium vehicles more attainable but will also drive a new era of value-driven experiences on the roads of New Zealand.” says Humphries.

The E5 stands out from its price competitors – the MG4, MGZS and BYD Atto 3 – mostly due to its large 61kWh battery, using the popular lithium iron-phosphate construction.

It offers 430km of range, three-phase AC charging and a modest 80kW DC fast charging speed. Power comes from a single electric motor sending 150kW/340Nm to the front wheels.

The interior features two 10.25-inch screens, dual-zone climate control, wireless device charging, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a comprehensive safety suite that includes radar cruise control and lane-keep assist.

The EX add features like heated seats front and rear, a sunroof, heated windscreen, ambient lighting, and more.

The E5 gets a substantial 7-year warranty with roadside assistance, and an 8-year/160,000km battery warranty, with the marque evidently keen to give buyers willing to take the punt on a new brand some added peace of mind.
