Video: Scania to showcase hybrid electric trucks at IAA

Scania is set to reveal a range of alternative fuel trucks and buses, including a plug-in hybrid, at the upcoming International Automobile Exhibition (IAA).

The trucks are based on Scania’s new generation range and include long-haulage, construction and urban applications.

The event is the largest European trade exhibition for trucks and buses and takes place in Hanover, Germany from September 20 to 27.

The new hybrid trucks are powered by Scania’s DC09 inline five-cylinder engine that can run on hydro treated vegetable oil (HVO) or diesel which works in parallel with an electric machine generating 130 kW (177 hp) of power and 1050 Nm.

The lithium-ion rechargeable battery’s energy window is set to 7.4 kWh. The trucks can be driven in full electric mode without any support from the combustion engine, thanks to electric auxiliaries for steering and brake air supply.

Also on display is the battery electric Scania Citywide and the liquified natural gas Scania Interlink buses. Scania will display a 13-metre Scania Interlink with an LNG range of up to 1000 kilometres.

Scania trucks senior vice president Alexander Vlaskamp says heavy transport is undergoing a “fundamental shift”.

“Scania aims to lead the way with all the low-carbon and zero tailpipe emission vehicles that hauliers require for their operations.

“Cities are now in the forefront but all forms of transport will need to adjust to meet the carbon reduction target as set forth in the Paris Agreement.”
