Volkswagen confirms major design revamp for ID electric SUVs
Volkswagen’s electric reboot is gathering momentum, with the ID 4 SUV set to undergo a significant update that brings it in line with the brand’s new design direction—first previewed on the ID 2all concept.
The update marks the second major refresh for the ID 4, which will join the ID 3 in receiving a comprehensive overhaul, including the reintroduction of physical controls inside the cabin.
Among the headline changes is the adoption of the new styling language showcased on the 2023 ID 2all. VW technical development boss Kai Grünitz confirmed the ID 3 will lead the transformation. He said the refreshed model will have “a family resemblance to the ID2” and adopt a lower, squatter stance.
Grünitz added the ID 4 will follow a similar path. “The swooping styling will be cleaner.”
Volkswagen is aiming to keep both models fresh until the end of the decade, when full replacements are expected. It’s anticipated that the ID 3 will ultimately be succeeded by the next-generation electric Golf in 2028.

Inside, both the ID 3 and ID 4 will receive a new dashboard layout and user interface. One of the most notable changes will be the return of physical buttons and knobs—replacing the much-criticised slider controls for temperature and volume.
A circular volume control makes a return –– “It has worked for years, there’s no reason to replace it,” Grünitz said.
The updated models are also expected to benefit from improved powertrain technology already introduced in newer EVs from the brand. This includes upgraded electric motors, battery systems and inverters, although specific details are yet to be confirmed.
Next year will see the debut of three new MEB Entry-based electric vehicles from the wider Volkswagen Group: the ID 2, Cupra Raval and Skoda Epiq. These models aim to prolong the lifecycle of VW’s current 400V platform while the brand prepares for its advanced 800V SSP platform, due in 2028.
In the meantime, Volkswagen will use the upcoming Munich motor show to preview the ID 2X—a crossover version of the ID 2 hatchback. The new model will go head-to-head with the Jeep Avenger and Peugeot e-2008 when it goes on sale in 2027.
The facelifted ID 3 is scheduled to arrive early next year, with the updated ID 4 set to follow in 2027.
