Yoogo Share wins Smarter Transport award

Electric car sharing service Yoogo Share won the Smarter Transport award at the NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards 2018 announced on November 22.

The first of its kind in New Zealand, Yoogo Share was formed in Christchurch in February, where it has 100 EVs with 3000 users and has eight hubs including the Christchurch CBD and Christchurch Airport. It is now expanding to Auckland in 2019 after opening its first Auckland CBD hub in the ANZ Centre.

Praised for the carbon savings made by facilitating business and private members to drive electric cars, the service championed by the Christchurch City Council has saved 80 tonnes of carbon emissions.

The council has shed 55 fleet cars to drive Yoogo Share EVs as its pool vehicles.

A Smarter Transport runner-up commendation award went to Waste Management NZ for its move to electric trucks. A story on Waste Management’s sustainability programme features in the latest EVtalk magazine.

Also nominated in the same category was car sharing scheme Mevo for its Wellington use of plug-ins.

The City Rail Link (CRL) won the Supreme Award – the NZI Transforming New Zealand Award by proving the infrastructure industry can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and its environmental impact while developing Auckland’s electric public transport infrastructure. The project is expected to result in an ongoing reduction in both congestion and carbon.
