Zeekr’s message-displaying 7GT special edition in consideration for NZ

Zeekr is considering a special edition of its new 7GT for New Zealand, with a face that can display messages, but the regulations on this side of the world may keep its party trick out.

The variant was discussed at the 7GT’s recent New Zealand launch event, attended by Australian media as well, where product manager Kenneth Lu told us the model is still “under discussion”, stopping short of confirming production. One example was already at the event.

Its standout feature is Zeekr’s ‘Stargate’ lighting system, built into the full-width front light bar. The display packs 1,711 light beads and refreshes at 30 frames per second, the same rate as standard online video, allowing it to show messages and moving patterns.

The system is the full expression of the light band Zeekr’s designers treat as the car’s signature. “The whole idea was to be able to create different digital signatures, your own personal light signatures, so the car can be very personalised to you,” Zeekr design director Javier Garcia-Gallardo told us at the launch. “So your friends from far away can recognise that one is your car.”

Two regulatory hurdles stand between the display and local roads. Australian Design Rules are strict on external displays, prohibiting anything that could be mistaken for an emergency vehicle. ANCAP is the second: 7GTs equipped with the display reportedly won’t achieve a five-star rating.

Both matter because Australia is the main market when bringing vehicles to this part of the world, and the standard 7GT is expected to arrive here late this year or early in 2027 with its five-star ambitions intact.
