Zeekr has officially revealed the 7X, its mid-size electric SUV, at an event in Sydney — and while the Australian pricing took centre stage, the vehicle itself suggests New Zealand could be in for a serious new EV contender before the end of the year.

Built on Geely’s SEA platform — the same architecture underpinning models from Volvo, Polestar, and Smart — the Zeekr 7X combines premium Scandinavian styling, ultra-fast charging, and spacious family practicality in a sleek five-seat SUV.

Dual-battery tech, wild charging times

One of the most notable talking points is the 7X’s battery technology. Two packs are available: a 75kWh “Golden Battery” LFP unit, or a 100kWh NCM long-range battery — with Zeekr quoting WLTP ranges of up to 480km and 615km respectively.

But it’s the charging speeds that generated the biggest reaction. The entry-level LFP version claims 10–80% DC charging in just 13 minutes using a 360kW charger, with the larger pack following close behind at 16 minutes. You would struggle to get into the shop, grab a coffee and get back out in that time with charging speeds that fast.

Both batteries use 800V architecture, and the vehicle is equipped with a 22kW onboard AC charger — still a rarity in the segment.

Interior tech and space

The Zeekr 7X doesn’t just aim for fast charging and long range — it’s targeting premium brands when it comes to cabin execution. The interior features soft-touch materials throughout, a wide centre console, a 16-inch Mini-LED display, and a 21-speaker audio system with a subwoofer. Higher-trim models offer massage seats, heated and cooled surfaces, and even electric opening doors.

Edwards noted that even the base spec felt impressively solid, outperforming rivals like BYD and Tesla on material quality and perceived cabin finish.

Rear seat comfort is also a highlight, feeling more spacious and premium than the Model Y and Sealion 7.

A large augmented-reality head-up display, paired with a Porsche Taycan-like digital cluster, rounds out the driver tech.

Australian pricing and NZ implications

Australian pricing starts at $57,900 AUD and tops out at $72,900 AUD for the AWD Performance variant, which offers 475kW, 710Nm, and a 0–100km/h time of just 3.8 seconds. Converted directly, that puts the 7X between $62,500 and $78,700 NZD — before GST and on-road costs.

While Zeekr has yet to confirm New Zealand pricing or launch timing, the brand’s SUV is expected to arrive locally alongside the Zeekr X and 009 later this year. Distribution arrangements are also unconfirmed, but the Giltrap Group remains a logical fit given its existing Geely brand ties.

Verdict: One to watch

With its blend of flagship charging capability, thoughtful cabin design, and real-world performance, the Zeekr 7X could become a disruptor in the Kiwi mid-size EV segment — assuming the price lands right and the supply chain follows through.
