Tesla confirms Texas Gigafactory

Tesla has selected Austin in Travis County as the next US Gigafactory site amid a fourth straight quarter profit announcement.

Its Q2 2020 financial results are strong as the company cut costs and provided plenty of EV deliveries to offset COVID-related factory shutdowns.

EVs and Beyond reported on the Texas move and other Tesla factory plans earlier this month.

In May, Electrek

said Tesla’s next factory would be in Austin and says Tesla hopes to have a Model Y general assembly line in Texas, also planning to build its Cybertruck there by the end of 2021.

Electrek later added Tesla had secured 850 hectares near Austin to build the factory, plus an incentive package.

The factory could employ more than 5000 people with Tesla expected to invest US$1.1 billion.

Tesla’s Fremont factory in California is its sole US assembly plant, although it has another in Reno, Nevada, to build EV batteries.

Another assembly plant is in Shanghai, China while a plant is also being built near Berlin in Germany.

Meanwhile, if Kiwi EV entrepreneur Nigel Broomhall has his way a “Gigafactory South” would be sought for the Tiwai Point aluminium smelter site in Southland, due to close in August next year.
