Polestar 3 will be US-made in 2022
The electric Polestar 3 SUV will be built in Ridgeville, South Carolina, at the Volvo Cars facility and is expected to be produced there from late next year.
Opened by Volvo Cars in 2018, use of this facility is one of the major advantages of having family ties with both Volvo and Geely Holding, both sharing ownership of the Polestar performance electric brand.
Polestar 3 is an aerodynamic SUV based on the Volvo EV platform, showcasing the next evolution of Polestar’s design language, and the native Android Automotive operating system, first debuted in Polestar 2.
“Production in the USA makes procurement more efficient, reduces delivery times and will even have a positive impact on the price of the Polestar 3 SUV,” says Polestar chief operating officer Dennis Nobelius.
“All of this makes the brand even more competitive in the critical American sales market.”
And given that America is among one of the largest single markets for EVs (including China, where the Polestar 3 will also be produced), it will no longer be relegated to export market status when it comes to Polestar, Nobelius explains.
Polestar spaces will be seen in 25 locations throughout 2021.
While Polestar is headquartered in Sweden, it has a research and development facility in the United Kingdom and its vehicles are produced in both China and the US.
The Polestar 3 follows the Polestar 2 electric hatchback now being sold and the Polestar 1 plug-in hybrid coupe which has finished production, while Polestar also plans to build a production version of the Precept concept.
