New generation Mini EV in 2023
The BMW Group’s Mini brand will present the first model in a new generation of cars powered by an all-electric drivetrain as early as 2023.
The future portfolio of all-electric vehicles will include the three-door Mini and a crossover model in both the small-car and in the compact segment as the brand moves towards a pure electric line-up from the beginning of the 2030s.
Mini is also developing concepts for John Cooper Works models with an electrified drivetrain. Through September 2021, Mini saw year-on-year sales increase by 7.9% and says that electrified Mini models accounted for more than 15% of its total sales.
As a brand operating globally in 109 countries, Mini says it is committed to continuing its success story with strategic expansion of the product range, technology innovations and new production sites.
While the UK-based Oxford plant will remain the spiritual home of Mini, from 2023 the brand will also build some electric models at a new plant in the east of China. It will also produce the first ‘Made in Germany’ Mini at the BMW Group plant in Leipzig which will be the next-generation Countryman.
Mini will use the cars produced in China there to meet the increased local demand there and in other global markets for emission-free driving fun. Alongside the next-generation Countryman, a new vehicle concept is being developed. This will meet the wishes of many customers for additional space and comfort says the brand.
All other models will be produced in the Oxford Mini plant, which remains the heart of production and the United Kingdom will continue to be the home of the Mini brand.
