A Green electric BMW for Metiria Turei’s election campaign
The Greens are driving what they preach – an environmentally clean electric car.
At least co-leader Metiria Turei is. She’s been loaned a BMW i3 EV for her election campaign and is touring the country in it.
“My friend gave me her car because she’s awesome,” Turei told Newshub

Turei’s borrowing the BMW i3 from friend Dee West to encourage EV use amongst MPs.
West is a trustee of the BetterNZ Trust, which promotes the uptake of EVs in New Zealand.
Standing in the Te Tai Tonga Maori electorate covering all the South Island and Wellington, Turei received the BMW i3 in Auckland on Friday and has been driving to various appointments such as the Green Party’s AGM.
It has zero emissions, which fits well with the Greens’ “Empowering NZ” policy which includes combatting climate change, and embracing electric vehicles and new technologies.
The party aims to encourage businesses to provide clean transport options for staff too.
Clean and green doesn’t mean slow though.
The BMW i3 can get to 100kmh in 7.9 seconds and reach 150kmh. It can travel about 160km on a full charge. Everything’s controlled via a touch screen, and it has a big sunroof.
