BHP to trial prototype Hilux double cab BEV

Toyota Australia and mining company Broken Hill Proprietary (BHP) will trial a prototype Hilux double cab battery electric vehicle (BEV) for about a year from late November 2024.

The Hilux BEV will be trialled at BHP’s Port Hedland in Western Australia, and will be used in various applications traditionally performed by diesel light vehicles.

BHP will provide feedback to Toyota after the trial.

“Joining with BHP to help further develop this prototype Hilux BEV is an important step in creating low-emission technologies in the light commercial vehicle space, mainly for use in harsh and demanding mining environments,” says Toyota Australia president and chief executive Matthew Callachor.

BHP Australia president Geraldine Slattery says BHP’s ambition is to electrify its light vehicle fleet (it has about 5000) and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
