Cashless petrol payment from car touchscreen

Kiwi motorists could soon be paying for petrol from their car’s touchscreen with the introduction of a new cashless payment app.

The app, developed by British car maker Jaguar, allows drivers to buy fuel and receive a receipt directly into their accounting software from within their vehicle.

The integrated app will introduce a new level of efficiency for an essential task, Jaguar’s New Zealand general manager Steve Kenchington says.

“With this new technology will come a more streamlined fuel purchase process and greater convenience for the driver,” he says.

“Car owners will no longer have to queue to make payments, unbuckle young children from safety constraints, brave bad weather, or even remember to bring their wallets as all payment details are securely stored in the app.”

At the same time, the app provides a paperless expense management process with GST receipts electronically added to the driver’s accounting software.

Kenchington says it is the first in a series of cashless tech innovations from Jaguar Land Rover which will include parking and drive-through restaurant purchasing.

He says the technology will be introduced for New Zealand Jaguar vehicle owners from 2018, and will be available at selected service stations.

Kenchington says unlike current phone-based payment methods, the app will use geolocation technology and a cloud based pre-payment check with the PayPal or Apple Pay wallet.

The payment app is one of several 2018 updates to Jaguar’s F-PACE, XF and XE models and will eventually be available across the entire Jaguar and Land Rover ranges.
