Five new EVs in the pipeline at Volvo

Few brands have shown greater commitment to electric vehicles than Volvo.

The Chinese-owned manufacturer was quick to announce its culling of diesel engines, and was one of the first to confirm an end-date for its production of internal combustion vehicles. It seems its next wave of electric offerings is just around the corner.

The brand held a dealer event in North America last week, where it detailed its upcoming plug-in models. Details of these models have since come to light thanks to numerous North American reports fuelled by sources that attended the event.

According to the reports, Volvo is currently developing five new electric vehicles; one sedan, two SUVs, and two wagons that Volvo reportedly referred to as “activity vehicles”.

The news aligns with Volvo’s earlier pledges. In 2019 the brand announced that it planned to launch one new electric vehicle each year for the next five years. With the C40 Recharge debuting last year, it’s possible that the five models showcased at the dealer event will have their releases relegated to one per year.

The report claims that one of the SUVs to be revealed borrows numerous elements from Volvo’s Recharge Concept [pictured]. Unveiled last June, the concept was a sleeker, more low-slung take on the traditional SUV silhouette. Initially considered by some to be a potential replacement for the XC90, it could instead debut as a stand-alone model.

The other SUV is reportedly going to sit between the XC60 and XC90 in terms of size. Information on the sedan and the two wagons, meanwhile, is thin on the ground.

According to the report, the two SUVs have confirmed release years. Production of the Recharge Concept-inspired model is set to debut next year, with the second SUV’s production slated to kick off in 2025.

Dealers attending the event were also shown the next-generation S90 and XC90 plug-in hybrids, as well as plans for a fully electric XC60 coming down the pipe.

Volvo has also already confirmed that it will phase out all internal combustion engine models from its line-up by 2030. While other brands have announced similar plans for their European arms, with a similar deadline, what makes Volvo’s different is that it’s an international pledge.

The brand is also ‘committed’ to delivering one million pure electric vehicles by 2025.
