GM aims for 20 electric models within six years

General Motors intends rolling out at least 20 new all-electric vehicles by 2023.

It’s introducing two within 18 months, likely to be based on its Chevrolet Bolt sedan.

This is part of an updated strategy outlined this week towards the company’s goal of an emissions-free fleet, some including hydrogen fuel cell technology.

GM has given no dates for its all-electric ambitions and plans to continue manufacturing petrol and diesel-powered vehicles for some time.

Last month, chief executive Mary Barra was reported as saying that while GM is pursuing EVs it is consumers and not governments which should decide how vehicles are powered.

That follows governments in China, Britain, Europe and California planning regulations to encourage emissions-free vehicles.

Meanwhile, the Ford Motor Company has established a team to fast-track EVs.

Dubbed ‘Team Edison’, it will develop EV partnerships with others, led by Ford’s electrification global director Theodore ‘Ted’ Cannis.
