GM expands Michigan operations for EV manufacturing

General Motors is expanding Michigan operations to help it make a million new EVs annually in North America by 2025.

It is in the process of leasing some or possibly all of the former AMC headquarters building on Plymouth Road in Detroit, according to Crain’s Detroit Business.

This facility will be used to support EV manufacturing at the GM Factory Zero plant in Detroit-Hamtramck near Factory Zero which produces the GMC Hummer EV pick-up (ute).

Factory Zero will also assemble the Hummer EV SUV, the Chevrolet Silverado EV, the GMC Sierra EV and the Cruise Origin EV.

GM has also reportedly signed a lease for space in another building in Pontiac, Michigan, to support EV production at the GM Orion Lake plant where the Bolt EV and Bolt EUV are built.

A GM supplier also signed a lease for space in Wixom, Michigan – the former site of Ford Motor Company’s Wixom plant – which will be used to store and ship parts for GM.

In early 2022, GM announced a US$6.5 billion investment in its Lake Orion and Delta Township plants – the former earmarked for battery and EV production and the latter for Ultium battery production.
