Kiwi wins Monaco ABB FE
Nick Cassidy (Envision Racing) raced to the top of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship with a storming drive from ninth on the grid to the race win in an absorbing round nine of the Monaco E-Prix on May 6.
He led home fellow Kiwi Mitch Evans (Jaguar TCS Racing), the result making Cassidy the new standings leader after sealing two wins and four further podiums in the last six rounds.
Envision Racing now tops the teams’ standings, 14 points ahead of TAG Heuer Porsche, while Jaguar TCS Racing is third.
Cassidy’s decisive early-race moves yielded the ultimate result, with the Kiwi placing his I-Type 6 perfectly around the outside of three at the Fairmont Hairpin on lap four and managing to hit the front as early as lap seven through the first round of “Attack Mode” activations, says an ABB FIA FE report.
“Once his engineer gave the green light for a six-lap sprint finish, Cassidy didn’t look back – despite the close attentions of Evans’ factory Jaguar.”
Evans got from sixth on the grid to second at the chequered flag and was within touching distance of Cassidy right to the safety car three laps from the race finish.
The New Zealand one-two made it four wins on the spin – a new Formula E record for a single nation.
Jake Dennis (Avalanche Andretti) was third (and third on the drivers’ table) and Jaguar TCS Racing driver Sam Bird crossed in 10th but received a post-race penalty for causing a collision.
Evans is now fourth in the drivers’ standings with Bird seventh and Jaguar TCS Racing remaining third in the teams’ standings.
The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship has a double-header race weekend on June 3 and 4 in Jakarta, Indonesia.
