Mobileye plans 100 Level 4 driverless test vehicles

A fleet of 100 self-driving vehicles for road tests in the US, Israel and Europe is planned by Mobileye and its new corporate parent Intel Corp.

Intel, which completed the NZ$20.8 billion purchase of Mobileye on Tuesday, wants to showcase its processors and software in vehicles with Level 4 automated vehicles – that is, cars and trucks that can accelerate, brake and steer themselves for extended trips, Auto News reports.

The fleet will include multiple car brands and vehicle types, starting with the first cars by the end of this year.

“Building cars and testing them in real-world conditions provides immediate feedback and will accelerate delivery of technologies and solutions for highly and fully autonomous vehicles,” Intel Corporation senior vice president-to-be and future Mobileye chief executive officer Amnon Shashua says.

“Geographic diversity is very important as different regions have very diverse driving styles as well as different road conditions and signage. Our goal is to develop autonomous vehicle technology that can be deployed anywhere, which means we need to test and train the vehicles in varying locations.”

Intel says it will combine proprietary capabilities from Mobileye, including computer vision, sensing, fusion, mapping and driving policy.
That, along with Intel’s open computer platforms and expertise in data centre and 5G communication technologies, aims to deliver a complete “car-to-cloud” system.
