New weekly EV MoT report added
A new weekly electric vehicle report from the Te Manatū Waka Ministry of Transport adds to its regular monthly updates.
The weekly report was updated on February 23 for EVs registered before midnight February 20.
“For this report, although they are not legally electric vehicles, it includes data for vehicles powered by using hydrogen fuel cells (FCEVs),” the MoT says.
It notes that 349 EVs were registered for the week ending February 20 – 20 more than the previous week.
Year-to-date figures show 1945 EVs registered in 2022 – 961 more than for 2021.
For the new report, the MoT says ‘electric motor vehicles’ includes only electric cars, utes, vans, buses and trucks etc. with four or more wheels – which it says does not include data for electric two or three wheelers.
It also adds to the total fleet size of 40,672 EVs about 1679 electric motorcycles.

Nissan – especially its Leaf – leads the top 10 EV manufacturers’ table year-to-date with 435 registrations or 22%.
