September boosted by strong EV sales

September saw 2355 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) sold in the new passenger vehicle market, 45 BEV light commercial vehicles, 18 BEV heavy vehicles, 491 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and 1674 petrol hybrid vehicles.

Mark Stockdale of the Motor Industry Association (MIA) says 14,879 registrations of new vehicles for September were the second strongest September on record – boosted by BEV sales – but that the month gone is down 9.9% compared to September last year.  Overall, the market year-to-date is 0.2% down on the first nine months of 2021.

Like August, September registrations benefited from strong deliveries of back orders for BEVs with 2418 units going to new owners.

The Tesla Model Y topped the list with 1502 units sold – ahead of utes the Ford Ranger (1043) and Toyota Hilux (989).

Other top selling new EVs were the BYD Atto 3 with 221 units sold in September, and the MG ZS with 178 units.

PHEV registrations were steady with 491 units registered for the month. Top selling PHEV models were the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross (167 units) followed by the Mitsubishi Outlander (138) and then the Hyundai Ioniq (41).

Among 1674 hybrids registered September were top sellers the Toyota RAV4 (246 units) followed by the Toyota Yaris Cross (184) and Hyundai Ioniq (150).
