The Electric Road to COP26
EV drivers from Europe and the United Kingdom are on ‘The Electric Road to COP26’ – the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow from November 1-12.
They are visiting companies at the forefront of EV innovation and also calling for all sales of new cars and light duty vans to have a plug by 2030 and to be 100% zero emission by 2035 in the 28 countries represented in the Global EV Drivers’ Alliance (GEVA).
Representatives of EV drivers’ associations from a range of European countries heading to COP26 are supporting the call for much faster transport decarbonisation globally fuelled by renewable energy.
En route they visited Gridserve, Myenergi and Britishvolt before heading to the Arnold Clark Innovation Centre in Glasgow where COP26 is held.
The EV drivers also aim to increase public awareness of the benefits of EVs for the environment and health, reducing carbon emissions and helping to improve air quality, and promote the voice of EV driver associations globally working with GEVA.
Transportation accounts for 24% of direct CO2 emissions from fuel combustion globally, of which road vehicles account for nearly 75%.
GEVA wants action now to shift from vehicles burning fossil fuels to vehicles running on clean, renewable electricity. A rapid shift to zero emission electric transport is currently being achieved in many countries and can be accelerated through supportive policies, it says.
Planet Mark’s Zero Carbon Tour Bus is joining the Electric Road in Glasgow.
Meanwhile, the world’s first electric two-seater Formula race car is revealed at COP26, slated for commercial production in Europe from 2024.
It involves Johnson Matthey’s eLNO battery cathode technology said to deliver up to 20% energy density improvements for more driving range and faster recharging, and Formula E’s Envision Virgin Racing which has an electric drivetrain delivering 250kW of power and 240km/h top speed.
The eLNO technology will be supplied to customers in Europe from two new production facilities, the first in Poland under construction and to be completed in 2022, the second plant planned in Finland.
