Toyota New Zealand has expanded its electric vehicle line-up with the introduction of the bZ4X Touring, a larger and more powerful version of its battery electric SUV designed for families and outdoor lifestyles.

The new model follows the arrival of the second-generation bZ4X and combines a larger wagon-style body with increased cargo space, higher performance and enhanced all-wheel-drive capability.

Toyota New Zealand chief strategic officer Andrew Davis says the vehicle has been developed for Kiwi drivers wanting the practicality of a wagon alongside the benefits of an EV.

“The bZ4X Touring delivers the space and practicality many Kiwi families are looking for, with more luggage capacity and rugged design elements that genuinely support active lifestyles,” Davis says.

“It’s a vehicle built for people who want to load up the bikes, boards or camping gear and head away for the weekend.”

The bZ4X Touring uses the same 74.7kWh battery introduced with the updated bZ4X but gains larger electric motors, increasing total system output from 252kW to 280kW.

Toyota says the vehicle supports AC charging up to 22kW and DC fast charging up to 150kW, while updates to the battery heating and cooling system are designed to improve charging consistency.

The Touring also adds Toyota’s X-MODE, Grip Control and Multi-Terrain Monitor systems to improve traction and off-road capability.

“The system delivers authentic off-road driving capability,” Davis says.

“Using the X-MODE and Grip Control bZ4X Touring delivers greater traction, stability, and confidence on gravel roads, ski field access roads, farm tracks, and other low-grip surfaces.”

Compared with the standard bZ4X, the Touring is 140mm longer and 25mm higher, increasing luggage capacity to 550 litres.

The model also features roof rails and offers towing capacity of up to 1500kg braked.

Exterior styling includes black wheel arch cladding, matte-black wheels and rugged roof rails aimed at reinforcing the vehicle’s adventure-focused positioning.

Inside, the Touring features synthetic leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, a 14-inch touchscreen, JBL premium audio system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, panoramic roof and a 1500W inverter.

Toyota says the Touring further expands its growing electrified line-up while targeting customers seeking a practical EV capable of supporting both daily driving and weekend recreation.
