VINZ halves EV entry certification costs

The cost of entry certification for full electric vehicles (EVs) has been halved by Vehicle Inspection NZ (VINZ).

It’s cut the fee from $165 to $82.50 to help increase the adoption rate of EVs here.

“EVs offer environmental and health benefits to New Zealand and New Zealanders,” VINZ chief executive Gordon Shaw says. “By introducing this initiative, VINZ is looking to encourage more EV imports by making them more affordable.”

VINZ inspects more than 60,000 used imported vehicles annually for importers, car dealers, repair workshops and compliance centres. A very small proportion of these are EVs, although numbers in the New Zealand fleet are growing with the total today around 3500.

VINZ is already supporting the increased adoption of EVs by offering hybrid and electric vehicle safety checks and sponsoring EV communications initiatives.

The trial will run from June 6 to January 31. It will then be evaluated and VINZ may consider extending the offer.

Half price entry certification applies to pure electric vehicles only (100% battery EVs) and does not include hybrids.
