Two new side-loading EVs ensure Waiheke Island’s weekly roadside rubbish collection fleet is 100% zero emissions.

The two Isuzu FSR/SEA-Drive 120 vehicles join a smaller Isuzu NQR there already converted to electric which has been in service for 16 months.

The Auckland Council warns people on the island to pay attention when the e-trucks are passing through as they’re much quieter than diesel trucks.

The new EVs add to the island’s drive to become fully electric under the Electric Island Waiheke Trust.

“These trucks are helping every local household to reduce its carbon footprint,” Waiheke Local Board chair Cath Handley says.

“Waiheke is future focused and making changes right now to clean up our air and to play our role in preserving the planet. We invite everyone to act, not just to talk about change.”

SEA Electric (NZ) general manager Stephen Fairweather says the company is proud to be involved in Waiheke Island’s EV movement.

“The SEA-Drive power-system has made it possible for these vehicles to be 100% electric, not only for driving operations but also by providing power for all of the ancillary refuse functions of the vehicles.”

Fairweather says the trucks have been in service since late last year and have about 130km range, usually returning to their island depot for overnight charging with about 20% battery health remaining.
