Boomers least likely to buy an EV
Research from financial comparison website Finder shows New Zealand’s Baby Boomer generation is the least likely demographic to buy an electric vehicle, but Generation Z would be the most likely to do so.
A small number of the survey respondents said EVangelist Elon Musk one was reason they wouldn’t buy an EV. Initial cost, battery lifespan and charging infrastructure were also noted as barriers to purchase.
The national survey of 2076 respondents found nearly half (45%) of New Zealanders would consider buying an EV as their next car.
The research results showed that 56% of Gen Z would consider an EV, followed by 51% of Millennials and 44% of Gen X.
It noted that Baby Boomers (36%) are the least likely to opt for an electric car.
Among those who wouldn’t consider buying an electric car or weren’t sure, the biggest reason was cost (72%).
Battery lifespan concerns (58%) came in as the second largest deterrent to buying an electric vehicle. This was followed by lack of charging stations (47%).
Finder New Zealand publisher Kevin McHugh says it is promising that people in New Zealand are so open to the idea of an electric car.
However 8% of survey respondents said EVangelist and Tesla chief executive Elon Musk is one reason they wouldn’t buy an EV.
