ChargeNet to officially open Taupo 300kW hyperchargers
New hyper-rapid EV chargers providing up to 400km range in 15 minutes have been switched on in Taupo Central, with an official opening planned on July 24.
The project was finalised in March 2021 with the support of the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) and round 7 of the Low Emission Vehicles Contestable Fund and is the second hyper-rapid site for ChargeNet after Bombay.
Specific EV models can charge at the 300kW hyper-rapid chargers six times faster than on ChargeNet’s standard 50kW charging stations, enabling the newest generation of EVs to add up to 400km of charge in 15 minutes.
Charging is provided for four CCS vehicles at up to 300kW and two Chademo vehicles at up to 62kW, allowing charging for up to six EVs at the site simultaneously.
This world-class initiative demonstrates that New Zealand is keeping pace with technological developments and is supporting the next generation of EVs, ChargeNet says.
“The new site is conveniently positioned in Taupo Central and will allow drivers to quickly add hundreds of kilometres of range in the time it takes to stop for coffee, or Burger King,” ChargeNet founder and chief executive Steve West says.
“A reliable electric vehicle charging network is essential for large-scale adoption by providing charging for multiple vehicles at once, drivers can travel longer distances between cities without worrying about queuing.”
To celebrate the launch of the hyper-rapid EV chargers, ChargeNet hosts a community event at 64 Ronberts Street, Taupo, on Saturday July 24 from 1pm, allowing EV drivers to experience the hyperchargers for themselves, and for those considering buying an EV in the future the chance to talk with well-informed people.
